wpautop( string $pee, bool $br = true )

Replaces double line breaks with paragraph elements.

Description

A group of regex replaces used to identify text formatted with newlines and replace double line breaks with HTML paragraph tags. The remaining line breaks after conversion become <
> tags, unless $br is set to ‘0’ or ‘false’.

Parameters

$pee

(string) (Required) The text which has to be formatted.

$br

(bool) (Optional) If set, this will convert all remaining line breaks after paragraphing. Line breaks within <script>, <style>, and <svg> tags are not affected.

Default value: true

Return

(string) Text which has been converted into correct paragraph tags.

More Information

Disabling the filter

Some people choose to disable the wpautop filter from within their theme’s functions.php:

remove_filter( 'the_content', 'wpautop' );
remove_filter( 'the_excerpt', 'wpautop' );

There’s also a plugin available to enable/disable the filter on a post-by-post basis.
